A Look Inside
For all the time the survivors stayed in hospital, no one from their respective homes, had any clue of their whereabouts. Hamza bribed his way, to find them in Kirinya Prison. After the sentence, he learned that the two prisoners were to be transferred to Bufulubi Prison in two days. Three days later, Namwembe, Julia, and Milton, arrived there, to check on him. Both women, came with their little boys; Kikuyunzi and Muwagula. They simply hoped it would help in healing his, obviously, broken heart.
Due to transport delays, they arrived ten minutes before Visitors’ Time-out. Under close monitoring, he was allowed to hug everyone of them. Tear filled eyes of husband, wife, sister, young ones, and Milton, told it all, as the two women clasped their arms around him. He held both children in his arms, for the first time.
“I'm sorry for all what I...!” Kalume started, facing his wife, but Warden Ovombe looked at his watch;
“Time out! Idiot!”
Kalume knew exactly what to expect right there-and-then, if he dared delay for just a few seconds! The warden had that long, very tough cane, skillfully cut out of male hippopotamus skin! Very effective for thrashing prisoners’ buttocks. He preferred punishing bare skin, to avoid “hurting innocent clothes"! In the next room, the wardens were thrashing, a new prisoner, one Morgan Kulye, a child molester. His shamelessly loud cries for mercy, devastated everybody, except Namwembe. She was confused by sadness and joy. She quickly fought away her deep thoughts about molestation, and a wife beater, fearing to be beaten. One new fact was that her husband narrowly survived death! He’s alive! Here he was! No matter what time it will take, he will, once upon a time, be back home!
So, Kalume was not prepared, getting thrashed, in front of his wife, sister, and brother-in-law! Not at all. He swiftly, waved to them, and waited for instructions. The women tasted the food they brought, handed it to Warden Ovombe, and left, for home.
